Sankt Georgen an der Leys is a small Lower Austrian municipality, and this 50 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued during and after the First World War, when small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation almost entirely due to hoarding and metal requisitioning. Four local officials signed the note — the Bürgermeister, his deputy, and two Gemeinderäte — which was typical for municipal guarantees of this kind, establishing collective civic accountability for redemption.
The JPR0887a designation places it within Jaksch's Austrian Notgeld corpus. Survivorship is largely a function of how many were redeemed versus retained as curiosities, and rural Gemeinden like this one often printed in very small quantities.
