St. Florian is the Upper Austrian market town most associated with the Augustinian monastery of the same name, but this 50 Heller note has nothing to do with ecclesiastical finance — it was issued by the civil municipal authority during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Austria in the immediate postwar years. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system after 1918 left local governments across the former empire scrambling to produce their own Notgeld to keep daily commerce moving.
The Jaksch/Pick reference places this within the vast Austrian Notgeld corpus. These municipal emissions were typically short-lived, redeemed within months, and printed in small quantities — survival rates vary considerably by issuing locality.
