Sankt Aegidi is a small agricultural commune in Upper Austria, near the German border. Like hundreds of similar municipalities, it issued Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria between roughly 1919 and 1921 — metal had been systematically stripped from circulation by wartime hoarding and the disruptions of imperial collapse. L. Haase was an established Linz printer responsible for a number of Upper Austrian municipal issues during this period, lending a consistent regional look to notes that were otherwise highly localized in their intended use.
The hyphenated designation "St. Aegidi – Engelhartszell" suggests joint or coordinated issue with the neighboring Marktgemeinde Engelhartszell on the Danube.
