Spitz an der Donau is a small wine-producing town in the Wachau valley, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the near-total disappearance of coins from circulation in the final years of the Habsburg monarchy and its chaotic aftermath. The central government simply could not keep pace with coinage demand during hyperinflationary collapse, so the burden fell to local authorities with whatever printing resources were at hand.
The official stamp was the issuer's primary safeguard against counterfeiting, a thin guarantee in a period when local Notgeld varied wildly in redeemability from town to town.
