Within the oval, the validity date 'Giltig bis 31 März 1921' appears, followed by the redemption obligation text and an anti-counterfeiting warning. Spital am Pyhrn is a small market town in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of comparable municipalities it issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — in the years following the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The 50 Heller denomination was among the most practical for everyday small transactions, and municipal issues at this level were typically printed in short runs by local or regional printers with no standardized production controls.
The Jaksch catalogue (JPR1007Ia) distinguishes at least one variant within this issue, suggesting differences in paper stock, overprint, or serial treatment — the exact nature of which matters considerably to completists working the Austrian Notgeld series.
