Senftenberg is a small market town in the Krems district of Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is one of the thousands of municipal Notgeld issues that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of the post-war coin shortage that left local economies functionally unable to make change. The Marktgemeinde issued these as emergency small-denomination scrip, redeemable locally and theoretically backed by the commune's credit.
The Jaksch catalogue reference places it firmly within the Lower Austrian series. Many issues from villages this size were printed in very small runs and redeemed quickly, leaving few survivors in collectible condition.
