Selztal is a small railway junction commune in Styria — its notgeld issues were practical necessities during the coin famine of the First World War and its aftermath, not commemorative productions. Emil Prachel was a Steyr-based printer who handled a number of Upper Austrian municipal emergency issues during this period, working at the cheaper end of the notgeld market with straightforward typography rather than the elaborate lithographic artwork that larger towns could afford.
The Heller denominations from small Austrian communes like this one were frequently over-issued relative to redemption capacity, and many were never formally retired.
