| Opmerkingen |
Schönbühel an der Donau is a small market town on the Danube in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities during and after the First World War. With the Austro-Hungarian monetary system collapsing and small coin effectively vanishing from circulation by 1917–1918, local authorities across Austria were legally permitted — then practically compelled — to issue their own emergency currency to keep commerce functional at the village level.
Printed by F. Seitenberg in Vienna, a firm that produced considerable quantities of provincial Notgeld during this period. The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0970III places this firmly within the Lower Austrian municipal series.
