Schönberg's 50 Heller note is a Notgeld issue, one of the thousands of emergency municipal notes produced across Austria between 1920 and 1921 when small coin effectively vanished from circulation. The federal government tolerated rather than authorized these issues, and many Gemeinden — Schönberg among them — moved quickly to fill the gap with locally printed paper.
Johann Hennerbichler's signature as issuing authority ties this to a specific municipal administration, not a bank. Redemption was theoretically guaranteed by the commune, though in practice many holders simply kept them as souvenirs once the acute shortage passed.
