Scheibbs is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austria between 1919 and 1921 — a period when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted, leaving towns to print their own stopgap currency. Hundreds of Austrian municipalities did the same, but the sheer volume of locally printed issues means provenance and print quality vary enormously even within a single community's series.
Printed locally rather than by one of the major Viennese or German specialist printers, production values on Scheibbs issues tend toward the modest end of the spectrum.
