Vorderseitenbeschreibung Polychrome letterpress vignette of the village of Sandl as seen from the north, rendered in an early 20th-century illustrative style with blue, green, and red tones; the scene shows the parish church with steeple surrounded by farmhouses and rolling wooded hills, captioned below with the inscription 'Sandl 1760'. The denomination numeral '50' appears in a circular cartouche at upper left and the word 'Heller' in a matching cartouche at upper right, with the locality name 'Sandl' on a decorative ribbon banner across the upper centre. The printer's imprint 'Kunstdruckerei Carl Jensen, Wien' is noted at lower right outside the border frame.

Rückseitenbeschreibung The reverse is printed in blue on cream paper and centred on a large ornate cartouche with decorative foliate corner ornaments enclosing six lines of verse in Gothic blackletter script. Below the cartouche, two columns of small-print text in German provide the legal basis and redemption conditions for the note, dated 23 July 1920, with a manuscript signature of the Bürgermeister at lower right.

Anmerkungen

Sandl is a small village in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel region, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in the early 1920s, it resorted to printing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — as coin shortages made everyday commerce nearly impossible following the collapse of the Habsburg economy. The Gemeinde Sandl 50 Heller belongs to this wave of hyperlocal scrip, issued under Austria's broadly permissive postwar Notgeld framework that allowed even the smallest parishes to commission their own notes.

Carl Jensen's Viennese printing house handled a substantial volume of municipal Notgeld commissions during this period, producing work of noticeably higher graphic quality than the hand-stamped or typewritten alternatives many poorer communes resorted to.
