Rauris is a small market town in the Salzach valley, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it was forced into issuing its own emergency currency because the post-war coinage shortage left everyday commerce nearly impossible. These Notgeld issues were a stopgap — the central authorities in Vienna could not produce small-denomination coins fast enough to meet demand, and local trade was grinding to a halt without them.
E. & K. Müller handled a considerable volume of Austrian municipal Notgeld during this period. The single signatory, Sommer, presumably a local official, authenticated the issue on behalf of the Marktgemeinde.
