Rabenstein an der Pielach is a small market commune in the Pielach valley southwest of St. Pölten, and this 50 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues that flooded the country between 1919 and 1921 when coin shortages made small change functionally impossible to obtain. The Sommer printing house in St. Pölten handled a large volume of Lower Austrian communal emergency currency during this period — a practical choice for valley municipalities without easy access to Vienna printers.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0808Ia-50 indicates this belongs to the first confirmed type for the commune, suggesting Rabenstein issued at least one subsequent series.
