Opmerkingen

Raabs an der Thaya is a small market town in Lower Austria where the Thaya river forks, and like hundreds of similar municipalities across Austria, it issued its own emergency small change notes — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that followed the First World War. This 50 Heller piece is the second type in the Raabs series (the "II" suffix in the Jaksch reference distinguishes it from an earlier issue), reflecting that demand for locally produced substitute currency persisted well into 1920, two years after the armistice.

Municipal Notgeld of this type was printed in enormous variety across Austria and Germany between 1919 and 1922, and Raabs issues are among the less frequently encountered Lower Austrian examples today.
