Pram is a small market town in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the near-total disappearance of coins from circulation after the First World War. These local issues were authorized under provincial frameworks but designed and printed at municipal expense, which meant quality and ambition varied enormously from one town to the next.
The E. Kruhl designer credit is uncommon enough in the Notgeld corpus to be worth noting — most small-municipality issues were farmed out to regional printers working from stock templates, so a named designer suggests this issue was commissioned with some deliberate intent.
