50 Heller Pöggstall

Pöggstall is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of the coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Local governments were legally permitted to issue small-denomination emergency currency, and hundreds did. Pöggstall was one of them.

Three signatories — Franz Lenauer jun., Johann Siedler jun., and Konrad Lenauer — authenticated this note, the "jun." designations suggesting these were family businesses or dynasties with established civic standing in the town.
