Austrian municipal notgeld of this type emerged from a practical breakdown: the postwar coin shortage was severe enough that small villages were legally permitted to issue their own fractional paper. Pischelsdorf's 50 Heller note, signed by Bürgermeister Franz Preiser, is a product of that window — most communes stopped issuing by 1922 when the central government reasserted control over small-denomination currency. Auer & Herauer were a regional printing concern handling numerous such commissions across Upper Austria during this period.

Collector demand for Austrian notgeld has always outpaced supply of the rarer municipal issues, and small Upper Austrian villages produced far lower print runs than the better-documented Styrian and Tyrolean series.
