Ottensheim is a small market town on the Danube northwest of Linz, and this 50 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued from 1920 onward as postwar coin shortages left municipalities scrambling to cover small transactions. Thousands of Austrian communities issued their own emergency scrip during this period, and the collector market that quickly developed around them encouraged increasingly elaborate designs — turning what began as a practical necessity into a minor print art form.
Kleinert's involvement suggests a commissioned rather than in-house design, a common arrangement for towns wanting something presentable. The JPR0717 series reference places it firmly within documented Jaksch/Pick Austrian Notgeld cataloguing.
