50 Heller Oehling

Oehling is a small municipality in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian communes between 1919 and 1921, when chronic coin shortages following the collapse of the Habsburg economy forced even tiny villages to issue their own emergency scrip. The printer, Queiser of Amstetten, handled numerous such commissions from surrounding parishes and market towns in the region — a local job-shop operation rather than a specialist securities printer.

Three signatories authenticate the note, which is more than many comparable issues carried. That detail suggests the Ortsgemeinde was unusually cautious about authorization.
