50 Heller Mondsee

Mondsee is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities from 1919 onward — local governments printing emergency scrip to address the chronic small-change shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. Marktgemeinde Mondsee had neither a bank nor a mint, simply the administrative apparatus of a rural township and whatever printer it could engage.

Reisenbichler's design credit is unusual for a piece this small in scope. The Kaltenbrunner signature almost certainly belongs to the Bürgermeister or a senior municipal official executing the issue under local authority.
