One of thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues produced in the chaotic period following the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire, when coin shortages forced local authorities — villages, towns, even individual businesses — to print their own fractional currency. Mitterbach, a small alpine community near the Erlaufsee in Lower Austria, issued through the Gemeinde rather than a commercial institution, which was typical for notes of this denomination and period.
Printed by Summer of St. Pölten, with design credit to Jos. Fluch. The b-variant designation in the Jaksch reference suggests at least two known states of this issue exist.
