Melk's 50 Heller notgeld belongs to the vast Austrian municipal emergency currency wave that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system after 1918. With the new republic's central banking infrastructure in disarray, hundreds of towns across Austria printed their own small-denomination paper simply to keep local commerce moving — Melk among them.
The guilloche underprint is a modest security measure for a note of this scale, suggesting the commune took some care with the printing contract rather than simply running it on a local press.
