| Beschrijving voorzijde | Printed on pink paper in dark brown ink, the obverse is divided into two vertical panels by a decorative border of grapevine and leaf motifs. The left panel carries a central landscape vignette of Mautern an der Donau as seen from the river, with a church tower and hillside buildings reflected in the water, framed by an ornate rectangular border; below the vignette appears a three-line guarantee text and the issue date 2 April 1920, with three facsimile signatures of municipal officials. The right panel bears the large denomination numeral '50' above the inscription 'Heller' and the municipal coat of arms, with the issuer name 'Stadtgemeinde Mautern a.D.' beneath. |

Mautern an der Donau, a small municipality on the south bank of the Danube opposite Krems, was among the hundreds of Austrian towns that issued their own Notgeld during the chaotic postwar period when centrally minted small coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. The 1920 date places this squarely in the second wave of Austrian municipal emergency issues — by then a well-organized phenomenon, with many towns printing attractive notes partly for collector sale rather than genuine monetary need.
The Jaksch reference confirms this as a documented local issue, but Mautern's series remains among the less-studied Niederösterreich emissions.
