Mautern an der Donau is a small town in Lower Austria, directly across the Danube from Krems. This note belongs to the enormous wave of Austrian municipal Notgeld issued in 1920, when chronic coin shortages — already severe during the war — persisted long into the early Republic as the new Austrian state struggled to establish a functioning monetary system. Towns and market communes issued their own emergency fractions because the central authority simply could not supply enough small change.
The Jaksc catalog reference places this firmly in the documented Lower Austrian municipal issues, though survivorship varies considerably by issuing authority — smaller communes often printed short runs that have since become genuinely difficult to locate in collectible condition.
