| Beschrijving voorzijde | The main field of this Notgeld issue is divided into two registers: a broad left panel printed in brown on a lilac underprint, and a narrower right panel in cream. The left panel centres on an oval vignette enclosed by a laurel wreath and flanked by decorative scroll ties, within which a detailed letterpress view of the Maria Taferl basilica and its hilltop setting is rendered. The denomination 'Fünfzig Heller' is inscribed in Gothic script to either side of the vignette, with a large underprint numeral '50' in lilac behind, while two manuscript signatures appear below with the role designations 'Kaufmann' and 'Gastwirt'. The right panel carries the large numeral '50' at the top and a small rectangular vignette of the Madonna of Maria Taferl above a townscape, accompanied by a commemorative inscription in German Gothic lettering. |

Maria Taferl is a small pilgrimage village in Lower Austria, home to a Baroque basilica that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Like dozens of Austrian municipalities in 1920, the commune issued its own small-denomination emergency money — Notgeld — to address the severe coin shortage that persisted well after the First World War. These local issues were partly functional and partly deliberate collectibles; Austrian Notgeld producers understood early that philatelic demand could turn a printing run into revenue.
The 50 Heller denomination sits in the middle of what Maria Taferl issued, suggesting a practical role in everyday transactions rather than purely souvenir production.
