| Obverse description | Cream-toned Notgeld note with a dashed border frame. To the left, a circular red municipal seal of Marchegg dated 1403 bears a heraldic bird and the Latin legend 'Sigillum Universitorum'; denomination numerals '50' appear in dark oval cartouches at lower left and right. The right half carries the title 'Fünfzig Heller' in Gothic blackletter script above the issuing authority text, followed by a guarantee clause, the date 'Marchegg am 1. Mai 1920', and three manuscript signatures for the Bürgermeister, Vizebürgermeister, and Geschäftsführender Gemeinderat. |

Marchegg, a small frontier town on the March River at the Austrian-Slovak border, issued this note as part of the Notgeld wave that flooded Austria in 1919–1921. With the postwar monetary system in disarray and small coins vanishing from circulation almost entirely, hundreds of Austrian municipalities turned to local printers to fill the gap. Franz Schweng in nearby Gänserndorf was a practical choice — close enough to keep costs and logistics manageable for a town of Marchegg's size.
Notgeld from minor Niederösterreich communes printed in such small runs rarely survived in quantity.
