Lofer is a small market town in the Salzburg Alps, and like hundreds of similarly sized Austrian municipalities, it issued its own emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria from around 1916 onward. These hyperlocal issues were a practical stopgap, authorized at the municipal level precisely because the central authorities could not supply enough small coinage to keep daily commerce moving.
Wagner of Innsbruck handled a substantial volume of Tyrolean and Salzburg regional Notgeld, which makes their output identifiable by certain consistent typographic conventions even across different issuing municipalities. The JPR0560b suffix indicates a variant within the Lofer series — likely a color or text difference from the base type.
