Lilienfeld's blue-tinted 50 Heller notgeld belongs to the second wave of Austrian municipal emergency currency, issued after the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left ordinary commerce unable to function for lack of small change. The Marktgemeinde — a market town rather than a full city — had neither the financial apparatus nor the printing resources of the larger Austrian municipalities, and local notgeld issues at this administrative level were typically produced in short runs by regional printers.

The "II" designation in the Jaksch reference distinguishes this from an earlier Lilienfeld emission, suggesting the town returned to notgeld production as inflation continued to erode coin circulation well into 1920.
