Lilienfeld's blue-series 50 Heller belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal Notgeld issued in 1920, when chronic coin shortages left small transactions nearly impossible. The Marktgemeinde — a market town rather than a major city — was one of hundreds of Lower Austrian communities forced to self-finance emergency fractional currency, printed locally and valid only within the issuing district.
The Ing. E. Schmidt designer credit is unusual for a note of this scale; most comparable Notgeld relied on anonymous commercial printers. Local redemption deadlines on such issues were often ignored in practice, and many circulated well past their nominal expiry.
