Austrian municipal Notgeld of this type was a direct consequence of the coin shortage that persisted well into the early republic years after 1918 — small denominations had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted, forcing hundreds of market towns and rural communes to print their own provisional fractional currency. Lilienfeld, a small Lower Austrian town best known for its Cistercian monastery, was one of many that turned to locally designed issues rather than waiting on Vienna.
E. Schmidt's designer credit is worth noting: many comparable Notgeld issues recycled stock vignettes, but named designers on these small municipal pieces often indicate a commission specific to the issuing town.
