Reverse description The reverse is set within an Art Nouveau decorative border of interlaced strapwork and stylized oak-leaf motifs, with the denomination numeral '50' in large figures flanking a central oak-leaf and acorn vignette at the top. The central panel contains the issuing authority title and denomination in typeset text, followed by a multi-line German legal text governing the conditions of issue, redeemability, and penalties for counterfeiting. Three manuscript signatures appear below, attributed to the Bürgermeister, the Gemeindeausschuss, and the Gemeinderat respectively, with the designer's name 'Hans Wunder' inscribed at the foot.

Comments

Leonding is a small municipality just southwest of Linz, and this 50 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued by towns and villages during the currency chaos that followed the First World War. With the imperial banking system collapsed and small coinage effectively vanished from circulation, municipalities across the former Habsburg lands printed their own emergency fractional currency. Leonding was one of hundreds that did so, each issuing authority responsible for guaranteeing redemption with whatever local funds existed — a guarantee that varied enormously in practice.

Hans Wunder's designer credit distinguishes this from the many anonymously produced pieces in the series.
