Leonding is a small market town just southwest of Linz — unremarkable in most respects, except that it was the childhood home of Adolf Hitler, a fact the town has spent decades navigating carefully. It belongs instead to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued after the First World War, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipalities scrambling to produce their own small-denomination emergency currency to cover coin shortages.
