50 Heller Langenlois

Langenlois, in Lower Austria's Kamptal wine-growing district, issued this 50 Heller note as part of Austria's vast Notgeld phenomenon — the emergency municipal coinage and currency that flourished between 1919 and 1921 when small-denomination coins effectively vanished from circulation after the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. Hundreds of Austrian market towns issued similar notes, but the Kamptal issues attract particular collector interest because of the region's strong local identity and the relatively small populations — and therefore small print runs — of the issuing communities.

Langenlois itself was among the larger Weinviertel wine centers, which likely kept demand for small change higher than in purely agricultural villages.
