Klaus is a small municipality in Vorarlberg, and this note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued between 1919 and 1921 when chronic coin shortages left local governments scrambling for small-change substitutes. Paul Gerin in Vienna was one of the busiest commercial printers of the period, producing Notgeld for dozens of communities simultaneously — which makes the involvement of a named local designer, Anton Paschke, a minor distinction worth noting.
Three signatures were required for validity, a formality that reflects the municipal accountability structures imposed on these quasi-official emissions.
