Austrian municipal notgeld of this period exists in bewildering quantity, but the Kitzbühel issues have attracted consistent collector interest partly because the town's chamber kept unusually tidy records of issuance and redemption. The 50 Heller denomination was the workhorse of everyday local exchange during the postwar coin famine — the Austrian state simply could not mint fast enough to meet demand, and municipalities were left to fill the gap themselves.
Hirnsberger's signature as authorizing official appears across multiple Kitzbühel denominations from this period. The official stamp substituting for more sophisticated security measures was entirely typical of municipal emergency practice in the Tyrol.
