Innerschwandt is a tiny village in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly small municipalities, it issued its own emergency small-change notes — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. These hyperlocal issues were authorized under Austrian emergency provisions that briefly allowed communes to print fractional currency when federal coinage simply wasn't reaching rural communities.

The signature of M. Wendtner almost certainly belongs to the Bürgermeister at the time. Innerschwandt's issue is among the more obscure entries in the Jaksch catalogue — the village's population was small enough that original print runs were limited, and survival rates for these thin wartime papers are correspondingly low.
