One of hundreds of Austrian municipal emergency notes — Notgeld — issued during the postwar economic collapse when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. Holzhausen's issue belongs to the broader Gemeindegeld phenomenon of 1920–1921, when villages, towns, and even individual businesses across Austria and Germany printed their own fractional paper out of sheer necessity rather than any formal monetary authorization.
