Austrian municipal notgeld of this type was a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that left small communities without usable change. Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis, a modest Upper Austrian market town on the Bohemian border, issued these notes under the authority of Bürgermeister K. Bogg as a local emergency measure — the municipality, not any bank, stood behind the paper.
The JPR0386b designation places this within the Jaksch-Pick notgeld cataloguing system. The "b" variant distinction typically reflects a colour or printing difference from the "a" issue, though both share the same 1920 authorization.
