Hinterbrühl is a small village south of Vienna best known today for the Seegrotte, the largest underground lake in Europe, used during the Second World War as a Heinkel He 162 jet aircraft assembly site. In 1920 it was simply another Lower Austrian municipality scrambling to solve the acute small-change shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The postwar Notgeld wave was a practical fix — the central government could not keep pace with coin demand, so thousands of communities printed their own.
Wehhofer in nearby Mödling handled many such local commissions. The series reference suffix "lb" indicates this is the light blue printing variant.
