Helfenberg is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a piece of Notgeld — emergency small-change currency issued by Austrian towns and villages during the inflationary chaos following the First World War. The Austrian crown's fractional coins had largely disappeared from circulation by 1920, hoarded or melted, forcing even minor rural communes to print their own substitute currency.
