Comments

Haslach an der Mühl is a small mill town in the Mühlviertel district of Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities after the collapse of the Habsburg economy left small change chronically scarce. The issuing authority here is the municipality itself — not a bank or savings institution — which was common for smaller Oberösterreich towns that had no local financial body to underwrite emergency scrip.

Three signatories is unusual for a note of this denomination and locality. L. Haase in Linz printed for numerous Upper Austrian communes during this period, and their output for small Mühlviertel municipalities tends to show modest production values relative to the more elaborate Notgeld issued by larger Lower Austrian towns.
