| Obverse description | The obverse is laid out in a landscape format with a wavy-line guilloche background throughout. Two folkloric bearded figure vignettes, rendered in a naive woodcut style, flank the central text panel on the left and right, each accompanied by the denomination '50 Heller' in Gothic script. The central panel carries the issuing authority and denomination in ornate Gothic lettering, followed by a guarantee text and a manuscript signature above the validity date. A small landscape vignette at the bottom centre shows a rural Alpine scene, with verse texts in Gothic script appearing in the lower left and lower right margins. |

Gutenbrunn is a small market town in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, it issued its own emergency small change notes — Notgeld — in the early 1920s when coin shortages left rural communities without functional pocket money. The 50 Heller denomination sat at the practical center of daily exchange: enough for a loaf of bread, too small to be covered by larger banknotes.
Local printing of Austrian municipal Notgeld was the norm rather than the exception, which means production quality varied considerably even within a single series. The Jaksc catalog remains the primary reference for Lower Austrian municipal issues of this type.
