Grünburg is a small market commune in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller Notgeld dates from the period when Austrian municipalities were issuing their own emergency small change out of sheer necessity — the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system had left coins virtually absent from everyday transactions. Thousands of Austrian towns did the same between 1919 and 1921, producing what became one of the most thoroughly documented hyperlocal currency phenomena in European numismatic history.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0303Ia places this squarely in the mainstream of Upper Austrian communal issues. Nothing in the record suggests a printing irregularity or unusual redemption history for Grünburg specifically.
