| Obverse description | At upper centre, a Gothic-script heading reads 'Notgeld der Marktgemeinde GARS a/Kamp', beneath which the bold denomination numeral '50' is flanked by the words 'fünfzig' and 'Heller'. A square vignette at the left carries the municipal coat of arms in dark red on a crosshatched ground, while an opposing oval vignette at the right presents a fine letterpress view of the local church and parish house (Kirche mit Pfarrhof), identified by a ribbon caption below. The issue date 'Gars, am 28. April 1920' is centred at the foot, accompanied by two facsimile signatures of the Vize-Bürgermeister and the Bürgermeister, along with the redemption obligation legend. |

One of thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues printed during the postwar economic collapse, this 50 Heller note from Gars am Kamp was produced at the F. Berger press in nearby Horn — a regional printer that handled a significant number of Lower Austrian Notgeld commissions in 1920. Karl Elleder's design work for these small-town emergency notes varied considerably in ambition; Gars, a modest market town on the Kamp river, was not among the issues that attracted collector attention on the speculative Notgeld market that briefly inflated demand before collapsing by 1922.
