Frankenburg am Hausruck, a market town in Upper Austria, was among hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to print their own emergency currency — Notgeld — after the collapse of the Habsburg economy left a chronic shortage of small-denomination coins. This 50 Heller note is part of that wave, issued by the local council in 1920 when the new Austrian Republic had not yet stabilized its coinage supply.
Jos. Feichtingers Erben was a well-established Linz printing house responsible for a significant share of Upper Austrian municipal Notgeld, which lends the series a consistency of physical quality unusual for emergency issues. The designer credit to Roschauer — almost certainly a local or regional commercial artist — is noted in Jaksch's reference but otherwise poorly documented.
