One of thousands of Austrian municipal emergency notes — Notgeld — issued during and after World War I when small-denomination coinage vanished entirely from circulation, hoarded by a public that correctly anticipated worse to come. Fischamend, a small market town on the Danube east of Vienna near the confluence with the Fischa river, issued these through local authority rather than any banking institution, with the Bürgermeister and town cashier signing individually.
Paul Gerin was among Vienna's more prolific Notgeld printers, handling municipal contracts across Lower Austria. Anton Peschke's design credit is relatively unusual — most issues at this scale went uncredited.
