Eidenberg is a small commune in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is one of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced between 1919 and 1922 to address the severe small-denomination coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. Municipal and even parish-level authorities across Austria issued these emergency fractional notes with essentially no central oversight, which is why the series numbers in the Jaksch catalog run into the thousands — nearly every village with a rubber stamp and a printing contact did it.
Franz Weixlbaumer's signature as signatory reflects the note's purely local administrative authority. No Austrian national bank backing, no redemption guarantee beyond the commune itself.
