Eferding's 50 Heller Notgeld is one of hundreds of Austrian municipal emergency issues that flooded circulation during 1919–1921, when coin shortages — accelerated by wartime hoarding and post-Habsburg monetary chaos — forced towns of every size to print their own fractional substitutes. What distinguishes the Eferding series from purely functional stopgaps is the involvement of V. Langhammer in Linz, a regional printer whose output for Upper Austrian municipalities shows noticeably more care in typographic composition than the rushed jobbing-house work seen in many comparable notes.

Eferding, the smallest statutory city in Austria by population, had limited fiscal infrastructure — which makes the orderly municipal authorization behind this issue more interesting than the note's face value suggests.
