Eben am Achensee is a small municipality on the Tyrolean shore of the Achensee, and its decision to issue emergency paper money in 1921 places this note squarely within the Austrian Notgeld phenomenon — the wave of locally produced small-denomination scrip that flooded the country between roughly 1919 and 1922 as metal coinage disappeared from circulation and central monetary supply collapsed after the dissolution of the Habsburg empire.
Wagner of Innsbruck was a regional print house responsible for a significant number of Tyrolean municipal Notgeld issues, which means this note shares its production pedigree with dozens of neighboring commune issues from the same period.
