Ebelsberg was an independent municipality on the southern outskirts of Linz until its absorption into the city in 1938. This 50 Heller note belongs to the Austrian Notgeld phenomenon of 1919–1921, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small denominations effectively unavailable and hundreds of municipalities across Austria issued their own emergency scrip to keep local commerce moving.
The Jaksch/Pick reference places this within the second series of Ebelsberg issues. Cajetan Strobl's signature as issuing authority appears on many of the Ebelsberg pieces — he held a municipal administrative role during this period.
